When I was very young I had this toy -- I think they called  it a LiteBrite -- that was pretty much a grid you could put these transparent colored plastic pegs in, and a light from the back would shine through them.  I cried when the batteries corroded and my parent's couldn't fix it Right That Second because we were driving.  I looked out the window to the evening and thought about how the stoplights and streetlights shone through my tears just like the toy was supposed to, stretching from neat round government-specified forms into long anamorphic bokehs of color.  Maybe the tears were what actually helped, but I've found similar visuals comforting for a while.
